When I first heard about the CU in DC program, I thought it was too good to be true. Having the once in a lifetime opportunity to spend the summer interning in our Nation’s Capital, while at the same time earning college credit towards my degree… I thought I had to be dreaming.
I applied for the program, and got accepted relatively early. I started looking for internships, filling out paperwork, the entire process was running smoothly. Excitement started to grow, I could not wait for the possibilities that were ahead.
I applied to roughly 25 different intern positions in D.C. Ranging from large worldwide corporations, to small in town business looking for cheap (or in my case free) summer intern help.
As the weeks went by, and departure day got closer and closer, I had still not heard back from anyone. No interviews, no phone calls, nothing. My faith began to dwindle. I started to arrange other intern plans back home in Denver, and was beginning to come to the realization that my dream of working in the Nation’s Capital was just simply not going to happen.
With 2 weeks left in the Spring semester of school I had essentially given up hope on spending the summer in D.C. I was sad, frustrated, and frankly a little pissed off.
Then one day as I walked back from class, out of nowhere I got a call from a D.C area code. My heart stopped as I answered the phone. I raised the phone to my ear, and all of the doubt, the pity, the sadness I had been feeling was gone just like that. Hope was back in my mind. That one phone call changed my life.
I ended up getting an incredible internship, and at the end of the day it all worked out. My experience so far this summer in D.C has been life changing, and I am very blessed to have this opportunity. The moral of the story is have faith. No matter how dreary it looks follow your heart, and keep the faith.
